Welcome to Our Dojo

The Jundokan Martial Arts Academy

Named after the famed "Jundokan" in Japan, the Academy was started to honor an ancient tradition. The time honored tradition of teaching, and passing on to the next generation, the arts that were patiently and skillfully taught over many years.

Our Dojo is located in Ray Brook, NY on Route 86 ( between the beautiful Olympic town of Lake Placid and the best little city in the Adirondacks, Saranac Lake ).

The Jundokan Martial Arts Academy teaches a mixed martial arts (MMA) style that incorporates many styles for their effectiveness in all situations of martial combat. This effectiveness shall be tested from time to time in competition.

Ultimately, martial arts is not at all about fighting. The ideal of the martial arts is to cultivate noble character and conduct, the virtues of modesty and courtesy.

No forestalling in the martial arts. Martial Art is the military art of self-defence and used to protect and preserve ones life and not to attack others of your own initiative.

Perserverance is the root of all conduct. True patience lies in bearing what is unbearable.

"Put back your hand when you are full of fight and retract your fight when your hands itch to deal a blow."

The ultimate object of human beings should be co-existence and co-prosperity in peace. All human actions, softness, and strength, should be united into peace. Avoid the fights and quarrels even if you were dared to.

By living the Martial Way you will never fail in life.

It will make you wise, confident, courageous, patient, a leader, modest, humble, courteous, independent, and in control of your life.

We wish you peace and prosperity and hope you enjoy our website. Please feel free to contact us and let us know what you think or ask us questions?

What Are Martial Arts?

A Martial Art can be defined as a system of techniques - physical and mental exercises developed as a successful means for self-defense, both armed and unarmed.

Martial Arts

Techniques, skills and abilities that are martial in nature but do not benefit the practitioner and their community are generally not considered martial arts. Mutual benefit must be a component. Martial arts utilize a variety of combat methods. Some fighting styles emphasize weaponless techniques while others teach the use of weapons. Some styles focus on grappling while others put their emphasis on striking. Weaponless systems use hand, arm, foot, shin, and knee striking and blocking techniques. Some weapons that may be used are the staff, sword, knife, dagger and nunchaku.

Not all forms of self-defense are actually considered to be martial arts. Some argue that unless warriors were using a fighting system in actual combat, it was not truly a martial art. Additionally, there is a difference between martial art and martial sport; the sport application of a combat system is not a martial art. Not all activities designated as martial arts are martial or artistic.

Martial Arts Today

While some developed from warrior combat, other martial arts developed as a means for spiritual and physical development. Strictly defined, martial arts are combat arts, methods for killing an opponent in battle. Martial ways, or, those arts that have a spiritual component, go beyond combat effectiveness and speak to psychological and/or spiritual survival.

Today, the martial arts are practiced for health and fitness, sport, law enforcement, spiritual benefits as well as for self-defense.
